Location: Most eastern Caribbean windward island, east of St Vincent and
northeast of Venezuela.
Area: 430 sq km / 166 sq miles.
Climate: Tropical dry with daily sunshine. Average midday temperature 29 C (85
F). Sea 25 C (79 F). Refreshing trade winds. Rain season June-November.
Warmest months July-August.
Time: Atlantic Standard Time, US EST -1, GMT -4.
Population: 266 000.
Language: English.
Religions: Christians.
Capital: Bridgetown.
Government: Parliamentary democracy; independent sovereign state within the
Commonwealth.
Entry Requirements: Visiting Barbados as tourist for maximum 90 days must
submit one of following documentation:
- A valid travel document.
- Return or onward ticket and other documents required for the next destination.
- The necessary documents for returning to the country of origin (valid
permanent resident document).
- Proof of sufficient funds to stay in Barbados.
Currency: US$ and Barbados Dollars, abbreviated BS$, are used parallel. US$
1 = BS$ 1.98. Major Credit Cards are widely accepted. Bring bills of 50 US$ or
smaller. Euro is generally not accepted, however most banks exchanges Euro
and other foreign currencies.
Banking Hours: Mo-Th 8:00am-3:00pm. Fr 8:00am-5:00pm. ATMs disburse US
dollars.
Medical Treatment / Health care: As protection against the tropical sun, a sun
protection lotion, sunglasses and a hat are recommended. Barbados has no
malaria or similar tropical diseases. There are no specific Vaccinations
required for visitors to Barbados. All travelers should be up to date on Routine
Immunizations. Check with your personal physician 4 to 8 weeks before travel.
Hepatitis A is usually recommended for all travelers and Hepatitis B for travelers
who may have intimate contact with local residents, especially if visiting for more
than 6 months. Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required from travelers,
coming from infected areas.   
All visitors to Barbados should arrange their own travel insurance before entry
on to Barbados. 24 hour emergency services are available to visitors and
residents from 2 major modern hospitals, The Queen Elizabeth and Bay View
Hospital. There are also several private medical facilities available. A
decompression station for scuba divers is also available 24/7.
Eat and drink freely.
Drinking Water: Barbados boasts the purest water supply you will find
anywhere. Rainwater is filtered naturally through natures own coral filter system,
and eventually collected underground. You can drink water from the tap
anywhere on the island.
What to Wear: Casual tropical wear. Beware of strong sunshine. Some
restaurants prohibit shorts or sandals. Bathing suits belong to the beach.
What to Bring: Camera batteries, sunscreen, disposable diapers, sporting
goods and books are all generally more expensive on Barbados. Local stores
carry a good selection of most items.
Cellular phones / Internet: Cable and Wireless currently cover the majority of the
telecommunications infrastructure in Barbados. The latest digital technology
and fiber optics systems are in place, therefore email, fax, international direct
dialing are all readily available. Cell phones from the US and Canada generally
work on the Bartel network. Europeans: It's always advisable to call your service
provider before you leave your county of origin. Cell phones can be rented on a
weekly a basis from a number of stores on Barbados. Direct international call
from hotel room, hotel internet service and internet cafés.
What to buy: Rum, jewelry and other locally produced souvenirs and products.
Tipping: It is customary to tip porters $1 per bag, and taxi drivers 5-10% of the
fare. Restaurants usually include a 10% service charge to the bill.
Transport: Busses runs all over from before dawn to round 10pm. Taxi: easy to
recognize by their signs. Agree on price before the ride.
Traffic: Drive to the left! Barbados has a good network of roads including a
highway which links north to south. By law you are required to wear a seat belt at
all times.
Driving License: Foreign and international licenses are accepted. However, a
permit must be obtained to drive in Barbados. All visitors must be over 25 and
hold a valid drivers license to obtain a permit. The cost of a permit which is valid
for a year is $10 BDS or $5 USD. If you are intending on hiring a car most
Barbados car hire companies will issue the permit for you.
Electricity: 115/230 V./ 50 cycles. Dual voltage appliances from Europe and
South America will need an adapter plug.
Criminality: Barbados is in general considered to be a safe and secure tourist
destination. However, this doesn’t mean that you should not take the obvious
measures of course: use the hotel’s safe for any valuables, precious jewelries,
cash, etc; don’t leave wallets, purses, cameras, etc out of sight; don’t leave
valuables visible in your parked car, or on the beach.
Note: It is prohibited to collect and export any kind of coral stones and shells!
